The Chiesa Matrice of Martano, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was rebuilt starting in 1596, as noted by the inscription on the portal, on the remains of the ancient Greek rite church. Built by craftsmen from Nardò in Lecce stone, it preserves in the portal the stylophore lions from the previous building and, above, the niche with the statue of the Assumption, also recovered from the old church.

The façade, with its double order, is sober in the lower part, but comes alive at the top with angels, garlands, serpents, sirens, and masks in Baroque style, while the pilasters display the typical Lecce motif of the "caged column."

The interior, in Latin cross and with three naves, houses altars from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, among which stand out the canvas of the Holy Annunciation by Oronzo Tiso and that of the Immaculate Conception, attributed to Cesare Fracanzano. Notable as well is the wooden ceiling from the eighteenth century, decorated with 75 panels, and the large organ placed above the entrance portal. The bell tower, more sober than the façade, was completed in 1769.
