In the heart of the historic center of Tricase, overlooking the current Piazza Don Tonino Bello, stands the Chiesa Matrice della Natività della Beata Vergine Maria, one of the most important religious buildings in the city.
Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, but the building we can admire today is the result of a major reconstruction that began in the eighteenth century, when the population growth made a larger church necessary. The work, which started in 1736, was completed in the second half of the century, giving rise to an elegant building in late Baroque style.
The façade, preceded by a wide staircase, is adorned with volutes, friezes, statues, and pinnacles. Inside, the Latin cross plan houses thirteen altars and important works of art, including paintings attributed to Paolo Veronese, Jacopo Palma il Giovane, and Francesco Antonio Catalano.
Particularly precious are the wooden pulpit made in 1795 by Raffaele Monteanni and the crypt dedicated to the Madonna di Pompei.
For the pilgrim on the Via Francigena, the Chiesa Matrice thus represents a stop of great value: a place where history, art, and faith meet before continuing towards the final stretch of the journey, to Santa Maria di Leuca.
